How to Find Your Readers

By Jenna Harte

Part of The Indie Author Series

JH: It's hard to sell a book if you don't know who you're selling it to. Jenna Harte shares tips on identifying and then finding your reading audience.

I wrote an article for Fiction University on Selling More Books with Marketing Mind Shift in which I suggested authors think less about selling a single book through a Tweet, and instead about building a community of avid readers. The article explained how to do that, with one exception; how do you find your audience? This piece is a follow up to that article to provide tips and resources on finding your readers and creating a community for them.

Finding Your Audience, Part 3: Create Your Own Community

By Angela Quarles, @AngelaQuarles

Surround your book with readers who want to know more about books like yours.

In part one of this series on Finding Your Audience, I talked about the pre-release steps you can take to find your audience. In part two, I tackled one aspect you can do to find your audience after you're published: building relationships and creating reader lures. In that article I mentioned that I'd tackle the second part of building relationships in this articlecreate your own community.

Sometimes it can be tough finding your "reader tribe" already in existence, so one thing you can do is create this tribe.

Finding Your Audience Part Two - Think Long Term & Build Relationships

By Angela Quarles, @AngelaQuarles

Part of the Indie Author Series

In last month's post, I talked about the pre-release steps you can take to find your audience. Today, I'm tackling finding your audience after your book's launch.

Lessons to learn from non-fiction writers

As you've probably already noticed, it's easier to find articles on this topic for non-fiction writers because their book's subject helps direct them on where to find their audience. Plus, there are clear strategies one can take to build a platform. The challenge is slightly different for us, but I think it'll be helpful to understand a little why it's easier (not easy, but relatively easier) for them so that we can find the right approach.

Finding Your Audience Part 1 – Pre-Launch Steps

By Angela Quarles, @AngelaQuarles

Part of the Indie Author Series

This is a question many writers face at one point or another, because it's at the core of what we do--we want our stories read by someone who will enjoy it. But it's the finding that can pose challenges. I'm going to touch upon certain aspects that could help you position yourself better. With a HUGE caveat--I'm still working on this myself :)

This post will be broken out into different elements so you can determine your weak areas. Knowing this will empower you with the information you need to search for indie articles that can give you corresponding advice. Also, I will be breaking this up into several posts, because the post-launch tips are meaty enough to deserve its own space.
