Writing Prompt: The Life-Changing Letter

By Janice Hardy, @Janice_Hardy

This week’s prompt is a story starter, so take the element provided and turn it into a story of any length you choose. If you’re stuck on size, I suggest aiming for 1000-2000 words.

Write a story in which someone gets an unexpected, life-changing letter.

What’s in that letter and how it changes a life is totally up to you. It can be positive or negative, any genre, any age group.

  1. One of my WIPs actually started this way. I eventually changed it since the plot wasn't working out, but I find it funny how I've already written the beginning of a story based on todays writing prompt.

  2. I work in a research library, and one day I honest to goodness found a late nineteenth century letter that began, "It's time to tell you the truth about your parents." I SQUEAAAALED. (It was from an aunt to her nephew. Turned out dad had gone crazy and was sent to an asylum in San Francisco. Mom couldn't handle the stress of two young children and ran home to Germany, so the aunt raised them. "We may not have got along, but I did my duty by you.")

    1. That's awesome. Sad, but what a great start to a book!
