Writing Prompt: The Chain Story: Just a Squeak

By Janice Hardy, @Janice_Hardy

This week’s prompt is a chain story! I’ll give you the first line, and someone else comments and builds off that line. Next commenter will build off that line, and so on.

In the event of two commenters posting at the same time and sending the story in different directions, just pick the line you like best, or try to incorporate both if you can.

It started with a squeak.

Let the fun begin.

  1. Oh dear God, if it had only ended there. It was a joke, and even midly amusing at first, devised by my acne-infested bug of a nephew with me as its subject.

  2. But it sounded like a real mouse! That kid knew how scared I was of those vermin running through my living room, and he had a pretty good idea of how I would react. I just didn't notice the lamp on the table next to me.

  3. I should have noticed—the lamp was my grandmother Maureen's. But scared people don't think.

Bare feet and shattered ceramic and glass do not mix.

  4. With a shard of flowered ceramic implanted in my instep, I toppled over onto my shoulder. And that's when I saw it.

  5. A roll of paper unfurled on the ruined rug (thanks nephew!). It must have been in the lamp base all this time. I knew what it was, of course. My grandmother's last will, the one she made just before she died. Typed up and wittnessed by a busybody neighbour, it disinheritated me. More than that, it spelt out exactly why I wasn't going to get a cent.

  6. And I slipped that sucker into my bra. My nephew looked so guilty so I decided to work it to benefit me.

  7. I marched right down to my attorney's law office with my stuffed bra. I demanded an audience, expectantly reaching for my dis-inheritance. It was stuck.

"Let me help you with that," he said, and fingered for my top button.

    I decked him.
