Writing Prompt: The Story Starter: Clowning Around

By Janice Hardy, @Janice_Hardy

This week’s prompt is a story starter, so take the element provided and turn it into a story of any length you choose. If you’re stuck on size, I suggest aiming for 1000-2000 words. This week, let’s start with an opening sentence.

It was a lousy place for a clown.

Take this opening line and run with it. See where it takes you.

  4. I know a lot of people don’t like clowns. Thank you, Stephen King, and Pogo the Killer Clown. And probably Ronald McDonald. Even I think he’s creepy.

But I’m more the Harlequin type. You know, those emo clowns with the pained tear? Like that.

Still, people stare daggers at me as if I crawled straight out of King’s clown lair. Children hide behind their mothers.

I thought this would be like the clown doctors... bring some joy to these poor people. Instead I’m retreating to the gate.
    Call me a coward.

That camp was a lousy place for a clown.
