Do You Want to Write Better Fiction?

By Janice Hardy, @Janice_Hardy

Then I've got some good news to share with you. To celebrate the release of my newest writing books (the Planning Your Novel Workbook, Revising Your Novel, and Understanding Show, Don't Tell), I'm heading out into the virtual world on the Better Fiction Blog Tour! August 1 kicks off the start of three crazy months, three book launches, and three chances to win a ten-page critique from me.

During the tour, I'll be talking about plotting and developing a novel and turning your idea into solid story, ways to revise a novel and turn your first draft into a finished draft, and how to spot, avoid, and fix those pesky show don't tell problems. Each tour leg will also share excerpts and exercises from one of the books, and offer a critique giveaway.

Just because I'm going on tour doesn't mean I'll be stepping out the lecture hall here at Fiction University. Things will continue as normal with all my regular articles and guest contributors, and I'll let you know where the tour stop is for that day (on days where there is a stop of course).

Here's a quick, breakdown of the tour:

August: The Planning Your Novel Workbook Tour

My Planning Your Novel Workbook releases August 1, and August is all about planning and developing a novel. This workbook is a companion book to my popular, Planning Your Novel: Ideas and Structure. For those doing NaNo this year, there are some special tour stops just for you on prepping your November novel to hit that 50K-word goal.

September: The Revising Your Novel: First Draft to Finished Draft Tour

Revising Your Novel: First Draft to Finished Draft
releases September 1, and you'll find revision tips from September 1 to 30. This book is based on my successful online at-home revision workshop, including all-new and extended content you won't find on the site.

October: The Understanding Show, Don't Tell (And Really Getting It) Tour

Understanding Show, Don't Tell (And Really Getting It) releases October 1, and all month long I'll be sharing tips on how to find and eliminate told prose in your writing. This is the first book in my new Skill Builders series, which will focus on helping you master one (often challenging) writing skill at a time.

Even Better! There's a Giveaway for Each Leg of the Tour.

Each month I'll be giving away a 10-page critique to one lucky winner. Visit the stops on the tour, leave a comment, and enter to win one of three critiques. One entry per blog, but you can enter at every stop on the tour all month long.

Next week I'll share the full tour schedule with links to all the stops. You'll also find the full list in the tabs until the end of October so you'll always be able to easily find where I'll be that day.

I hope you'll join me on my tour.

A long-time fantasy reader, Janice Hardy always wondered about the darker side of healing. For her fantasy trilogy The Healing Wars, she tapped into her own dark side to create a world where healing was dangerous, and those with the best intentions often made the worst choices. Her novels include The Shifter, Blue Fire, and Darkfall from Balzer+Bray/Harper Collins. The Shifter, was chosen for the 2014 list of "Ten Books All Young Georgians Should Read" from the Georgia Center for the Book. It was also shortlisted for the Waterstones Children's Book Prize (2011), and The Truman Award (2011).

Janice is also the founder of Fiction University, a site dedicated to helping writers improve their craft. Her popular Foundations of Fiction series includes Planning Your Novel: Ideas and Structure, a self-guided workshop for planning or revising a novel, the companion Planning Your Novel Workbook, and the upcoming Revising Your Novel: First Draft to Finished Draft, and Understanding Show Don't Tell (And Really Getting It).
