Worth the Trek

First off, Happy Mother's Day to all those mom's out there. I don't know how you do it.

So go honor Mom by talking her to see the new Star Trek movie, because it was AMAZING. If Mom isn't into Trek, then send her to a nice day spa for the afternoon so you can go see it.

I had my doubts when I first heard about this movie. A reboot? After Superman Returns, I wasn't sure my heart could take another let down. But then, there was Batman Begins, so I had a fifty-fifty chance, right? And the more I saw about Trek, the more I was intrigued. Then I heard the line...

"Your father captained a starship for twelve minutes and saved 800 lives. I dare you to do better."

I got goosebumps and knew I had to see this movie. (go script writers)

I can honestly say I've never seen a better reboot of a series. They came up with a great way to make the story fresh and not have future movies feel like a rehash of the old ones, and they found a way to toss aside existing cannon (not an easy thing to do). And the little nods to the original series were priceless.

They also had perfect casting, especially with Karl Urban as Bones, and Simon Pegg as Scotty. Talk about actors born to play those roles.

I wish I could find some writerly thing to tie into this, but anything I said would give things away. But go see it, and look at how they handled the story and the characters. You'll come away with insights. Or at least that totally jazzed feeling when you see an awesome movie.

  1. I saw it last night and I totally agree. I also wasn't too excited about it before hand, but after seeing it I thought it was great. A lot of people were worried it wasn't going to be Star Trekky enough, but they managed to add in those modern film making techniques and styles while keeping the old Star Trek feel mostly in tact.

Especially after seeing Wolverine the other week, Star Trek seemed like the greatest movie of all time.

  2. Didn't see the Wolverine movie, but I will definitely see this Star Trek movie. The last time I watched anything Star Trek was when I was 8! Lol! So long ago. You can tell I'm not a fan, but with everyone talking so much good about it, I don't think I can resist

  3. I've decided it's worth booking a babysitter for. But it may be a while before I manage to get to the theater.

  4. Ooo, not a good vibe for Wolverine :( I wanted to see that too.

Glen, I think even non-Trek fans will enjoy the movie. It's a good romp and you don't need to know anything for it to make sense.

Juliette, make time :) Tell the hubby it's date night! (okay, it feels weird answering you in a post. [she's my best friend, FYI])

  5. Oh, I just watched Star Trek last night - and yes, it totally rocks! Simon Pegg was priceless! It's too bad that there probably won't be a sequel (at least, I haven't heard any) - I can imagine this movie gathering more Trekkies :D
