Writing Prompt: The Challenge: The U-Turn Rewrite

By Janice Hardy, @Janice_Hardy

This week’s prompt challenges you to write something outside of your comfort zone. It’s designed to push your creative boundaries and stretch those artistic wings.

This week’s challenge:

Rewrite a scene in your WIP so it has all the opposite outcomes.

Pick any scene you want, though this could be a good way to shake up a scene that isn’t quite working yet. Start in the same spot, but have events, thoughts, situations and whatnot unfold opposite to how they currently read.

For example, if your protagonist goes left, have her go right. If she assumes a snide comment was meant for her and gets mad, let her assume it was for someone else or meant as a joke and not get offended. If she’s sad, make her happy. If she succeeds, let her fail.

The goal is to look at the scene in a way you never intended and see how it turns out. What worked? What didn’t? Did the new perspective change how you as the author perceived the scene?

It doesn’t have to match your novel’s continuity, this is just for fun. But if you can get the opposite details to work within your existing story, so much the better.

Have fun!
