A few weeks ago I noticed something a bit exciting—today’s diagnostic will be the 300th critique I’ve done on this site. The very first Real Life Diagnostic debuted on May 17, 2010, and back then, I had no idea it would become a weekly column, or have so many wonderful and dedicated readers and critiquers.
It’s a bit mind-boggling to think of how many snippets I’ve read and diagnosed over the years. Some of those snippets have even gone on to become published novels (and I wish I had a list of those, but it never occurred to me to keep track of that stuff before now).
Many of you have submitted multiple submissions, and others have shared your revised snippets. It’s been fun to see how much you’ve improved and how your writing has evolved. Of course, it’s always a pleasure to see new stories as well as the occasion outlier—such as a query letter or even song lyrics. It's also funny to see how much the column itself has evolved since those early days.
So here’s a big THANK YOU to everyone who trusted me enough to submit your work for a diagnostic. Another giant HUG to those who have faithfully read and offered feedback all these years. So many of you have gone above and beyond with your critiques and I know you’ve helped a lot of writers.
I look forward to the next 300.
