Writing Prompt: The Skill Builder: The Point of Your Point of View

By Janice Hardy, @Janice_Hardy

This week’s prompt focuses on an exercise designed to work on a particular skill or technique, such as a POV exercise or character builder. Today’s skill:

Point of View

Write a scene set in the same place, dealing with the same issue, but write it three times—one each from the perspective of three different characters. Use these details:

The Setting: A long retail store check-out line (your choice of what type of store and while the customers are in that line).

The Problem: Someone is arguing with the cashier (your choice of what the argument is about).

The Points of View:
The cashier, the customer who’s arguing, and a person waiting in line (all other details about these people are up to you).

The Goal of the Exercise:
To learn to see a scene from multiple perspectives and show how other characters are feeling, even when they’re not the POV character. Try to focus on how each individual character in this situation would see and react to the events of this scene. Different perspectives have different opinions about what’s going on. Try to show hints of what all three of the characters are thinking and feeling.

Extra Challenge:
Do each scene in a different POV style. One in first person, one in tight third person, and one in omniscient (if you want to really push yourself, do this three time, one set of three in each of these points of view to study the differences).
