It's a Brand New Sunday: And I Have a Cool New Book to Read - Cleopatra's Moon

When I first started this blog back in March 2009, I really didn't know what I was going to do with it. I knew it would be about writing, but I also knew that blogs I liked to read gave me a sense of who the blogger was personally. I mixed in both writing posts and personal posts. As it developed, the personal stuff dropped away, and vanished altogether after the redesign. By then I knew what I wanted the blog to be and why folks came here.

But I've missed those personal posts.

So, now I'm trying something else new. Social Sundays! (you know me and my love for alliteration)

Sunday is the only day of the week I don't have a post, which just feels unbalanced to me. I figured it was the perfect day for a "get to know me" post.

It seems fitting that the "launch" of this new column is all about my friend Vicky Alvear Shecter's launch party for her debut novel Cleopatra's Moon. It was girls' night out for me and some writer pals (a big wave to Robyn Hood Black and Donna H. Bowman) so we loaded up the car and headed on down to Little Shop of Stories in Decatur. (isn't that the most awesome name?

Robyn got the idea to dress up for it, so she and Donna donned their togas. I didn't have anything appropriate to wear, but after seeing how great they looked I wished I'd gone and bought some fabric for my own toga. Donna let me borrow some sparkly headbands for my "goddess look" and folks kept calling us the Three Fates all night. However, we did get some strange looks when we went out for dinner afterward. Guess we shouldn't have dined outside on the patio, huh?

Me with Vicky, Roman Soldier, Robyn Hood Black, and Donna H. Bowman at the Cleopatra's Moon launch party at Little Shop of Stories

We weren't the only ones dressed up though. A fully-armored Roman soldier was there as well, posing for pictures and making sure no one got out of line (okay not really, but he did look pretty intimidating)

Me and Vicky with Drag Queen Cleo (the action figure in red)

The turnout was fantastic (yay!) and Vicky's reading and presentation went splendidly. She even had Drag Queen Cleo there for good luck (you can see him in the picture). All in all a really successful launch and I couldn't be happier for her.

I always have such a great time at these events and highly recommend them. If you've never been to a launch or a book signing, check out your local bookstore and see who they have coming by. The bookstores in my area are constantly bringing in fabulous authors and it's fun to hear them talk about their books. It's also a great way to meet fellow writers since you see the same faces quite often. Book fans are book fans, and we're a chatty and friendly bunch.

Grats again to Vicky on her launch, and welcome to my first Social Sunday!

What fun thing did you do this week?

Yay for personal Sundays! I of course love your writing posts, but I like hearing about what you have going in your life as well. :D That party looked like a lot of fun, and you guys look so cute.

And I get to have another book on my wish list. Cleopatra's Moon looks very interesting.

What fun thing did I do...hmm, I had sort of a normal week. I worked on my rewrite. Went to work. Oh! My husband and I started Buffy the Vampire Slayer because we were both home with the flu. I've been enjoying the show a lot.

Have a great week!

Looks like fun was had by all.

Are all drag queens good luck at launch parties, or just Drag Queen Cleo?

That was so much fun! I also wished I had worn a toga, but all I had were my gladiator sandals! Still, I got to take a 'growling' pic with the soldier, so that's a big plus!

I love seeing the personal side of authors on their blogs. Looking forward to more Social Sundays.

Looks like a great launch party. And yes, that is one of the best book shop names I've heard!

Too cool, Janice. Glad the launch went well. The Roman soldier is a great touch.

Love your writing posts, but it is nice to get a glimpse into your world. Instructional is always better when one has an idea of whom the instructor is :)

Have a great week!

Elizabeth, the hubby and I watch Buffy about once every few years. Great show. Angel too. We just finished watching that again several months ago.

Maine, I really don't know.) DQC has brought Vicky luck, but I need more data to find out for sure :)

Ashes, oh that's cool! At least you had the sandals, so you fit.

One thing about doing these posts now is that I'll have to do something fun every week to blog about right?
